My original pivot vac will no longer keep a charge, and I’ve been looking for a decent replacement. Thank goodness that B&D finally came out with this lithium powered model! It has the rubber flap to keep debris from falling back out, and a charging stand that automatically makes contact and can be wall mounted. It is more powerful, runs much longer, all while being smaller & lighter. The brush pivots up when needed and is never lost. A nice feature is that it comes apart for easy cleaning. Overall a super unit, it wins over the Dyson and Hoover and Shark, by far.

Update: Evidently you can replace the battery pack, when needed. Two screws hold on the side cover, and then the battery pack plugs in. Great improvement over earlier models!

Be prepared to be surprised and meet a new generation of hand vacs. I’ve lost count of the number of “dustbusters” I’ve owned and there was not one of them that was designed any different from the first, starting with the plastic snout which snapped into a handle which contained a motor/fan and a cone-shaped filter. They all shared the same downfalls which were an average of 2-3 minutes useful life on a charge, pitifully weak suction, extremely small dust capacity and when the NiCad battery died (which it invariably would after a year or two) the entire thing had to be thrown away because the battery was not replaceable.

As recently as only a couple of years ago I searched every conceivable source for a hand vac that was powered by lithium ion batteries, which seemed so obvious because nearly every other device by that time had abandoned the old NiCad battery technology and gone lithium. At the time there was only one readily available model, the Hoover Platinum LINX, which cost about $150. It was nice but still used the older direct suction method as opposed to the cyclonic technology that most better full-size vacs use now.

When I saw this model from B&D I had reservations because frankly some of their products have not been very durable and are not usually cutting-edge. I took it out of the box and did a “wow” right out loud. This is the best looking hand vac I’ve ever seen! It looks and feels far more expensive than it is. And it shares a very similar cyclonic technology to the very expensive Dysons (and my favorite vac I’ve ever owned, my cyclonic Hoover upright). I couldn’t wait to charge it so I turned it on for a few seconds and, did I say “WOW”, I honestly have never seen any battery-powered hand vac with as strong a suction. Charging it fully took about 2-3 hours which was aided by a clearly visible and relatively large blue light right on the front of the vac.

    Here’s what I like:

    1. It curls up into a little ball, like a cat, while in storage or charging and takes up only a tiny amount of counter or wall space. It is truly attractive enough to leave right out in the open on a kitchen counter or shelf

    2. The snout is adjustable about 180 degrees with lockable positions and is very ruggedly made

    3. It opens instantly to dump the dust out and everything is washable for periodic full cleaning

    4. It does not lose any power/suction over a reasonable amount of continuous use. By reasonable I mean 10 – 15 minutes, not less than 5 minutes like every previous hand vac I’ve owned

    5. It does not require any cumbersome, difficult to attach, accessories. Kudos! Those are just more things to find storage for and to break and get lost. Having to use all kinds of accessories defeats the entire purpose of a grab-and-use hand vac. The crevice tool and brush are built in. That’s an example of genius of design

    6. Time will tell how long the battery will have a useful life but it is fact that lithium batteries have a much longer life than NiCads

    7. And … while it works with a powerful whoosh, it is not an annoyingly loud sound. Most hand vacs have a high-pitched whining sound, this sounds more like an electric fan set to high.

This is by far the best hand vac I’ve ever used and I’m impressed with the selling price. As far as I can see this is the one to beat and represents the best value currently on the market.
