Does a Decent Job but With Minor Annoyances,
All carpet cleaning machines essentially do the same thing:
1. Wet the carpet with a cleaning solution.
2. Scrub the carpet with brushes
3. Suck the cleaning solution and dirt out of the carpet
What distinguishes a carpet cleaning machine is how easily, conveniently and thoroughly it can do those three things.
For this machine, assembly out-of-the-box requires a Phillips screwdriver and about five minutes. Most of this machine is made of plastic. From the side, it looks like a huge red and black running shoe with a handle on it. It comes with a hose and three attachments; one narrow cleaning tool with brush, one wider cleaning tool with brush and a crevice tool. They are for cleaning hard-to-reach corners and upholstery. A switch on the bottom front of the machine toggles between operating the machine upright or through the hose. All of the tools have a convenient push-button sprayer on them.
In this cleaner there is plastic tank containing a plastic bladder that holds about a gallon of cleaning solution. The bladder shrinks as the cleaning solution is being consumed, leaving space in the tank for the dirty solution that is being sucked up by the machine. The machine and its brushes clean a swath about a foot wide on each pass and it does a pretty good job of cleaning carpets right to a wall or baseboard. I found that this machine successfully sucked up about half of the dirty cleaning solution, leaving the remaining solution to dry from evaporation.
This machine managed to remove, with pretreatment, all but one old spilled coffee stain from my “test” carpeting and left all carpeting that I cleaned fresh and sweet smelling. The thickest carpeting needed more than twelve hours to dry after cleaning. I used both the small hand brush and the crevice tool to clean corners and other areas of carpeting where the machine would not fit. Each attachment had a convenient push button for spraying cleaning solution and they worked reasonably well.
After cleaning my carpets, I found that emptying and cleaning the solution tank could be done in just two or three minutes. At this price, I was not expecting an “industrial strength” machine. This upright cleaner is definitely not one of those. At this price point, I suppose I can put up with the small solution tank and the flimsy plastic attachment holders. For small carpet cleaning jobs it works surprising well but having the hose attachment repeatedly fall out of its holder while cleaning carpets when using the machine upright is annoying. Nonetheless, the machine does the three things that I have listed well enough to tackle small jobs. For big jobs, you’ll need a more robust machine with a bigger solution tank.

Priced right,
This is the 2nd Bissel that I have owned. The first one just conked out after 2 years. In retrospect, it probably would have lasted longer if I had taken better care of it (cleaned off the rotating brush and replaced the belts) but it was good while it lasted.
The Pros of this machine:
Built in heater;
Powerful brushes that clean and fluff up the carpet giving it a nice appearance;
Comes with all the standard attachments;
Great spot cleaning tool with sprayer which is excellent for stain removal – I recommend using this, which is an excellent product with a fresh smell BISSELL 2X Deep Clean & Protect, 60 oz, 62E5A; and
The upholstery cleaning tool actually works!
Cons:
Leaves the carpet wetter than I would like (I have Berber carpet);
The attachments don’t stay put in the “onboard storage”; the hose is stiff plastic and keeps falling in the floor;
I hate the 2-in-1 tank – the clean water sits inside the used water reservoir. It is unwieldy and has to be emptied and refilled often
Overall it is a pretty good carpet cleaner for the price. It definitely works better and is more cost effective than renting a carpet cleaner at the grocery store!
