This review is from: Dyson DC50 Animal Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Misc.)

Three months ago, our 16 months old LG compressor vacuum cleaner powered brush stopped working, and I told my wife let’s just get a Dyson this time. Fortunately, we had protection plan and got a full refund, and we were on a mission to find the best vacuum cleaner. We also considered Miele and Sebo, but decided on Dyson because of it being bag-less and also the price difference. However, the only model available in March was DC41, which is a great vacuum, but I heard some news from UK about the new modified line which included the DC50 and the smaller canister DC47; unfortunately, these were not available any time soon for us living in the States. Therefore, we had to get a small Hoover vacuum and wait patiently until these new models become available.

    DC47 or DC50? Animal or Multi-floor Dilemma

After much anticipation, last night we finally got our DC50 Animal. Although we don’t have any pets, we chose Animal version because my wife has long hairs; Compared to other versions, Dyson Animal vacuum cleaners are a bit more expensive, and they come with special attachments for picking up hairs. Both DC47 and DC50 Animal come with a tangle free turbine head that retails for about $70 but is much cheaper on Amazon, and you have the option to get a Dyson multi-floor vacuum and buy the tool separately. We compared DC47 and DC50 in the store, and found out that the brush head on DC47 is turbine head while DC50 has powered brush. We also found out that DC50 has a larger and better designed dustbin with 0.21 gallons over DC47’s 0.15 gallons dustbin. The handle to hold DC47’s dustbin over the trashcan is very small and user-enemy. The button for opening the dustbin lid in DC47 is on the side of the dustbin in an awkward place, while DC50’s is right at the top. In our observations, the only good things about DC47 were the compact size and the retractable cord, and although Dyson’s website indicates DC47 has more suction power than DC50, these were not enough reasons to sway our vote toward DC47, and we ended up getting the DC50.

    Unpacking and Setup

You will be surprised by how small the retail package really is! It may be a little bigger than a gym bag, and it has a handle to carry around. Opening the package was a bit rough, but assembly was really easy and quick. The assembly took less than 5 minutes, and because the box had some really hard glue, I actually spent more time on opening the box than the setup itself. Anyway, we were up and running in less than 10 minutes. One quick tip: install the attachments holder before you put the cord back, since it blocks the slot.

    Test Drive and Cleaning

All I can say is WOW! The suction is amazing, and the motor is very quiet. We have never seen our carpet look so new and bright since we moved in. The suction if not better is as good as the LG Compressor that we really liked, and overall it seems this Dyson has better built. My wife has long hairs and cleaning the brush is a breeze with our new Dyson compared to our previous LG, Hoover, and Samsung vacuums. We live in a 2-level apartment of about 1100sq.ft, and we had to empty the dustbin twice–once for upper level, and once for lower level. The dustbin bottom lid is attached to the base with a small plastic tab that is a little bit flimsy, so I hope it does not break anytime soon. Good news is, Dyson has a 5 years parts and labor warranty so we are covered. This vacuum is a bit pricy, but it seems unavoidable with today’s trends.

    Conclusion

Unfortunately, quality appliances are getting more expensive. We considered Miele and Sebo before Dyson, and we found out that they both are even more expensive than Dyson. It is true they may be better on the long run, but they are not bag-less and therefore less green. This Dyson is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Although we are very satisfied with the purchase, it wouldn’t hurt if this wonderful vacuum cleaner was a tad cheaper.

    Pros:
    – Powerful Suction
    – Easy to Clean: both the brush head and the dustbin
    – Lightweight
    – Very Quiet Operation
    – Thoughtful Attachments: including Dyson…

We bought our first Dyson Animal vacuum over 7 years ago, and even though it nearly killed me to spend so much money on a vacuum cleaner I wanted something that I knew would last and be worth every penny. We had had 2 other brand name vacuums (Hoover and Black & Decker) previously that lasted less than 2 years before needing repairs, and their performance was minimal. I can proudly say that our original Dyson is STILL going strong and works amazingly – with regular care and maintenance it still performs perfectly and every time I vacuum I’m amazed at how much it picks up.

When I first received the new Dyson DC50 Animal, I made a point of vacuuming with our old Dyson first, so I could see what the new vacuum was capable of. After we had it assembled and ready to go I have to say I was skeptical – the new Dyson was a lot smaller than the old one, it looked kind of…shall we say ‘wimpy’ compared to our older, larger model. Still I knew it would perform well, so I plugged it in and vacuumed one room. I was flabbergasted when I was done at the amount of dirt, dust and pet hair that the new vacuum had picked up even though I had JUST vacuumed it with the older Dyson.

Dyson’s technology for their vacuums when they first came out was cutting edge, and they have definitely kept up with and improved that technology and their vacuums are still #1 in my opinion. They took what they had that worked amazingly and made it better – smaller, more efficient, and with even better suction. The DC50 is incredibly light – a mere 11.6 lbs – my 5 year old can use this vacuum (and loves to!), but don’t let it’s light weight fool you, it vacuums better than any other full-size upright vacuum.

Dyson improved the cleaner head to self-adjust for optimal floor contact – whether on shaggy carpet, short-fiber carpet, or hard floors, the head is always in contact with the surface for optimal cleaning – there is no need to adjust anything.

Dyson has added more cyclones and made them smaller, making the amount of suction phenomenal. You truly have to see this to believe it – clean your floor with your vacuum that you ‘think’ works well, and then clean it again with a Dyson. Every time I vacuum I’m thinking ‘how on earth can my floor get so dirty??’

I love the ball that steers this vacuum, it makes vacuuming effortless and easy – after using a vacuum like this you will find any other vacuum tedious and difficult to use. Dyson has placed the motor inside of the ball so it’s weight is centered there for easier movement, and the outside is less bulky and has fewer parts.

The DC50 Animal comes with a Tangle-Free Turbine tool that is wonderful for removing pet hair. Unlike the traditional vacuum accessories or main parts that have the brush bar that constantly gets hair tangled around it, the Tangle-Free Turbine tool has counter-rotating heads with brushes that easily remove hair from carpet and upholstery.

As with all of the Dysons this one is bagless and has an easy-to -remove plastic canister that is see-through so you can easily tell when it needs to be emptied. You’ll be surprised at how often you have to empty this. With a push of a button you pull the canister out, hold it over your trash-can and the bottom drops open so you can shake the contents into the trash. It can’t get much simpler than that. The filter sits just inside the top of the canister and easily pulls out for cleaning.

The Carbon fiber brush bar has a mixture of stiff nylon bristles that go deep into carpeting to remove dirt, and anti-static carbon fiber filaments that pick up fine dust from hard floors. There is no need for me to ever ‘dry mop’ my kitchen floor again – this vacuum does the work of 2 items, picking up the dust as well as the smaller particles.

The combination tool worked wonderfully to clean my ceiling fans which were very dusty – the soft bristles are great for spot cleaning and gentle dusting – I’ve even used them on my blinds with great success.

The 5 year warranty that comes with the DC50 Animal is simply the icing on the cake – our old Dyson is going strong and I’m sure will last many more years – but having that bit of assurance from Dyson makes their product even more valuable and worth it. Given the choice, I would gladly purchase a Dyson every time – their vacuums do not fail or disappoint.

This review is from: Dyson DC50 Animal Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Misc.)

We purchased this unit as a replacement for our 7 year old Dyson which is starting to show its age. One of the big issues with our older model is that is heavy and difficult to move between floors. The DC50 is much lighter and has more suction power to it than our older model, so it does a much better job on our carpets. The animal power brush (air powered and plugs into wand) is also pretty good. I do not have to struggle hard to get the cat hair off of our couch. Definitely better than the one our original Dyson animal came with.

Now the reasons why I gave it 4 stars. The Dust bin is much smaller than our older Dyson, so we end up having to empty it a lot more often. If you have pets like we do then the bin gets filled quickly and if you wait to long than emptying it becomes an issue. You will have to reach in and plug the fuzz out because it gets compacted in the bin if you wait to long. The model we purchased has a 25′ foot cord. Our older model has a 35′ cord, you miss the extra 10 feet. The wand system is more flimsy than the expensive model, you will break it if you aren’t careful. Also the unit overall isn’t as sturdy as the other units. I suggest you keep your careless teenagers away from it as its likely to get broken.

Despite my negative reasons above the unit overall is still very good. The negatives I listed were probably incorporated to keep the unit light and compact, which it definitely is.
