Ah, faint praise: “a bit better than a broom.” But, there are pluses and minuses all through this “Eureka AirSpeed 2-in-1 Stick and Handheld Vacuum” (I’ll call it “the stick” for this review) that could have let me rate it at a mere OK. Instead, I upped my rating to a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

    – Materials: the stick is made of light-weight plastic. On the plus side, it’s light enough that you can slide it every which way without effort. On the minus side, I worry about the handle attachment: it’s very thin. My guess is that if it ever breaks, it’ll be at the handle.

    – Assembly: easy to assemble. For all intents and purposes, this stick comes in three pieces. You take them out of the box, shove the head into the main body and do the same for the handle. You’re done. If you want to remove the head to replace it with the crevice tool, just pull it off and stick that tool on. Removing the handle to convert it to a rather large hand-vac involves pushing a plastic tab down, so it’s just a tad more involved. But, it’s still easy.

    – Surfaces: it’s designed for hard floors. There’s no beater bar, and while it will pick up some crumbs from a small rug, it just glides right over and ignores things like cat hair. I’m not complaining about that. I’m just noting it.

    – Reach: if you have a small house with fairly small rooms, the 16 foot cord on this stick should be fine. Our house isn’t that big, nor are the rooms all that large, but I have to use two different outlets to vacuum each room. Because of the furniture location in one room, I can’t even cover the whole thing. It can lie down almost flat on the floor, so it can reach quite easily under most furniture.

    – Effectiveness: on our tile floors, it works great. Its one advantage over a broom is that because it is a vacuum, it will pull in those dust bunnies that tend to scamper away when sweeping.

    – Noise: it IS a vacuum. So, there IS noise. But, it’s not all that loud

    – Cost: this was the make or break category. It’s currently selling for around $30. That’s reasonable. If it had been much above that, I’d have lowered my rating. But, with this pricing, a case can be made for owning it.

    – Comparison to a broom: this stick is a heavier than a broom, but it’s not unwieldy. It’s tied to electrical outlets, but for small rooms, it’s not an issue. It’s noisier than a broom, but it’s not deafening. You don’t have to bend over to sweep up the debris as you do with a broom, but you do have to reach down to plug and unplug it. Being able to get under furniture is about the same. Dust bunnies run towards it, not away from it. It’s more expensive than a broom, but not unduly. So, overall, I’d say if you’re looking for an easy way to keep hard-surfaced small rooms “swept,” this stick is a reasonable thing to use.
