Overall summary: Good machine for periodic deep cleaning, probably too heavy and time consuming for weekly cleaning, very easy to use except the cord really needs to be about 10 feet longer.

    Longer review/commentary:
This little machine happened to arrive the day my cleaning lady (let’s call her Maria to protect her privacy) was here working on the wood floors. A few months back she had me order a Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop Kit, FG1M1600GRYRD and she likes that a lot. It’s light and easy-to-use and she can use it without a bucket, and she has me wash the microfiber pad after she leaves (we make a good little team and I feel so lucky to be on it). She gave this machine a very suspicious glance and I could tell immediately she didn’t like it one bit as I assembled the handle (tip: put the screw in BEFORE you slide it down on the body of the cleaner, and back it off just a tad if you can’t find the hole for the screw). I put it together and began using it right away on some wood flooring she hadn’t yet mopped and watched in amazement as the clear waste water container filled up with black mud-like water. I ignored the instructions about vacuuming first and just went to town with this thing, sucking cat hair and dust balls right up into the reservoir. It did NOT suck up the dry cat food (you can tell which member of the family contributes much of the dirt) so it’s not a replacement for a vacuum, but that was a good test. It did suck up most of the other small dirt and did a good job with the tumbleweed-like balls of fur that Hudson seems to shed on an hourly basis.

Maria ignored me as I used this contraption, every so often cutting a sideways glance of disapproval. Finally after about 30 minutes of this, I asked her to come closer and I would “demo it” for her. Her final take? Too heavy. Too much water on the floor. Too slow. She will keep using her beloved Rubbermaid THANK YOU VERY MUCH unless I want to pay her more money to stay and run this thing which she promised will warp my floors, run up my electric bill, and lead to the end of civilization as we know it. I apologized for the machine and told her she’d never need to see it again, and put it in the corner, facing the wall like an unruly student.

After she left I decided to do the Maria vs. Hoover challenge, and took the cleaner upstairs to an area which she had just mopped with the holy Rubbermaid. The water was BLACK BLACK BLACK, and I will attach a photo to the product description if I can figure out how to do it (why can’t we attach photos to our reviews, Amazon?). So the floor that I thought was so clean still had a lot of dirt on it. I also used it on the kitchen tile and it did a great job, sparkle sparkle.

So who’s right? Those that say it’s too heavy and slow (Maria and some other reviewers) or Hoover that says this will change your life and give you clean floors? Well, my answer, after a day of experimenting with this thing: BOTH. Yes, I think this is too slow and heavy to use every week. But think of this like shampooing your carpet… every 6-12 months it’s worth the extra trouble and time to give your carpet a good deep cleaning. Same with your wood floors. I’m going to keep this around and use it when Maria’s at some other lucky soul’s house, and let her think that the Rubbermaid is the sole reason the floors look so good.

    THE TECHNIQUE:
The directions left a lot to interpretation, so here’s the technique I used today after a lot of trial and error, and it works:
    – Set machine to CLEAN (“dry” is only is you have excess water or need to clean up after a flood or something)
    – Fill reservoir with clean water and the solution that comes with it (though I think a mild soap would be just fine was well, you don’t want to use much on wood floors) (maybe a little lavender water would be nice?) Pre de Provence Linen Water, Lavender, 33.8 -Ounce Bottle
    – Push the finger trigger on the handle and push machine away from you. Let go of trigger. Pull machine towards you. So when you push it away you are spraying water and scrubbing, when you pull it back you are drying. Repeat the pull back if you need to suck up more water.

If you have made it this far into this review, wow, my thanks for your perseverance and thank you for putting up with my stories. Here are my pro’s and con’s:

    Con’s:
    – Short cord. I don’t know why it is, but I hate having to unplug and replug a cord in the same room. Ideally I’d like to plug it in once and do the whole house but that’s not going to happen. I…
