Former Dyson Stowaway convert!, December 14, 2011

This review is from: Miele Delphi S2120 Canister Vacuum Cleaner with SEB217-3 Powerhead w/ Free Shipping (Kitchen)

Bought this item in Sept. 2011, have given it a few months’ use in order to write an accurate review. Have been a Dyson fan for about 10 years or so, but after owning this German-manufactured Miele, I’ll never go back to Dyson.

This Miele is so much more quiet, it’s hard to believe. Great cleaning power, but not much more noise than a hand-held hair dryer. One of the things I disliked about the Dyson Stowaway canister was the noise… and we have a large Lab-mix dog that was scared to death of it. Just bringing the Stowaway into the room would cause him to bolt, before it was even plugged in. With the Miele, he’ll actually remain in the same room, and our other two dogs aren’t bothered at all by the vacuum cleaner.

The Miele is also much more manueverable than the Stowaway… the powerhead is significantly lighter and easier to navigate. The three small pivot-casters on the bottom of the canister also allow it to easily follow the operator around the room, something that was quite frustrating with the design of my old vacuum cleaner. Less cumbersome and lighter weight also means less fatigue for this chore, making at least this aspect of housecleaning much more pleasant. Our house is one story, with a combination of laminate, tile, permanent (old crappy) carpeting, and throw/area rugs. The adjustable suction settings are indispensable for thorough cleaning, without damaging upholstered furniture or delicate rugs.

Another big difference between the two canister models is the use of a disposable collection bag for the Miele. The bagless technology is a big selling point for Dyson, but I had problems with my old Stowaway leaking dust from aound the top of the collection bin. Short of ordering a completely new vortex-assembly, (about $70.00, plus shipping) there was no way to remedy this problem. (And I couldn’t guarantee this would work, or if the dust bin was simply poorly designed.) It does little good to vacuum hardwood or laminate flooring, only to have the dust be redistributed immediately back into the room. With the Miele self-enclosed bags, emptying the collected contents is significantly easier… no more dust and dog hair sticking to everything due to static electric charge and the friction of the clear plastic bin. The Miele filter bags hold more than expected, lasting longer than I thought they would; the dust and debris is also compacted into the bag. With the old Stowaway, the dust bin required emptying after each room. (We have three dogs… and LOTS of dog hair!) Now we don’t have to empty the vacuum cleaner for weeks. This has been a tremendous time- and mess-saver.

Storage is also an issue in our house, and while the Miele doesn’t ‘fold up’ like the Stowaway, the base unit can sit vertically or horizontally in a closet or beneath the bed; the hose easily detaches from the wand, and the wand and powerhead can be ‘parked’ in one of the two notches located on the base unit, while the base is positioned either vertically or horizontally. The light weight of the unit also allows it to be easily carried to another room or second floor without fatigue.

After being a loyal Dyson customer (both upright and canster models) for many years, I’m shocked at the differences in engineering, noise, weight, and overall effortless operation between Dyson and Miele. The Miele wins, hands down! German engineering and manufacturing at its finest. (Dyson is made in Malaysia.) I just can’t say enough good things about this Miele.
