Miele : Somat Dishwasher Salt (B1640) 1.2kg/Packaging may vary
- Used to soften water in dishwasher.
- Box contains 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs)
Somat Salt is used to soften water in dishwashers. Water from the tap often contains lime. In order to reduce the lime deposited on dishes in the dishwasher, some dishwashers have a water softening unit which withdraws the harmful lime from the water. Table salt is not suitable for water softening in dishwashers because it usually contains insoluble components which can affect the efficiency of the water softening unit.
All Miele dishwashers have a built-in water softener to optimize cleaning results. To function perfectly, this softening unit requires special salt. Miele recommends using Somat Salt.
Somat is made in Germany by Henkel and imported into the US by Miele.

Machine needs this salt,
I have a Miele Dishwasher that needs this salt. I ran it for some time with the “salt” light on, and got some problems (Drain/Intake light) and the cycle would stop mid cycle, and had to be restarted.
Since adding the salt, Dishwasher has worked fine. The salt is required for the built in water softener. I can’t get it locally, and this was the best deal I could find.

Perfect for your Miele,
I’m in the Dallas area and there are a few Miele dealers around, but ask them for the dishwasher salt and they give you a blank stare! It’s nearly impossible to find the Mile branded salt around here and when I did find it (45 miles away) it was $14. I have never seen anything like this in a supermarket around here either. This product is the exact same as the Miele branded box for a better price. So thankful for Amazon!
Tips- NEVER use table salt or water softening system bulk salt from hardware stores in your Miele; they don’t dissolve the same way making them useless and they may have additives that can ruin your Miele’s softening system. Also if you are seeing poor performance from your detergent (Powder, gel etc) then change brands! I have used many different ones and seen differences brand to brand. I am currently using the Cascade Complete All in 1 pacs and have been pleased. I have the DW detergent setting at “2 in 1 Tab” which disables the DW’s rinse aid system.

It Works on Bosch,
Without it, my dishes do not dry even with Jet Dry. I am glad that Amazon carries it, because I can’t find it in grocery stores.
