This review is from: Oreck XL Replacement Roller Brush Assembly

Background: The Oreck was given to us about 8 years ago as it wasn’t working. Took it apart and discovered the suction tube was totally clogged and the drive belt was broken. Fixed both of those and we’ve used it since, no problems. I decided that perhaps the brush should be replaced, it still picked up, but I later discovered that was due to powerful suction. Emailed Oreck to ask if there was a way to determine when to replace the brush. Yep, put a straight edge over the brush opening and if you can’t see bristles, it’s time to replace. OK. Ordered this unit from Amazon. When it came in, disassembled the Oreck and removed the old brush, discovered that it was marked “new” and “old”…hmmm, naturally I hadn’t noticed how it came out. Looking at the new one, yep, it was also so labeled. No instructions, so fast trip to youtube and watched a 90 second video (what’d we do before the internet?) and found that the “new” should be closest to you with the unit upside down on the floor. Reassembled and it works great.

Observations: Take the bottom off your Oreck and see if you can simply rotate “new” with “old.” and avoid replacing brush for now. When you order this unit,[…] get some belts as they are the biggest failure point of these machines. Have at least a 4″ long (blade) #1 or #2 Phillips screwdriver for dis assembly. The new “multipurpose” screwdrivers with interchangeable bits are too thick to access the screws.
