Not a Dyson, but Still a Great Vacuum, August 3, 2012

Being a long time, 100% advocate, and die hard Dyson fan, I would turn my nose up at anything less than the Bugatti of vacuum cleaner world. In fact, I’m still a die hard Dyson fan, although I’m beginning to soften a bit – the Panasonic Jet Force Bagless Vacuum is actually pretty good for cost. I’m doing a comparison to my much older Dyson DC14 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner, keeping in mind that Dysons today are probably much lighter and better than what I currently have.

    1. Assembly: I can’t do an accurate comparison, as it’s been about 10 years since I’ve assembled my Dyson fresh from box. That said, the Panasonic is very easy to set up – it takes one screw to attach the handle to the main unit, and you just need to remove the packaging tape to get going. Both the Dyson and the Panasonic break down easily for cleaning. Tie!

    2. Weight: The first thing I noticed when I started using the Panasonic is that this thing is incredibly light! My old Dyson literally gave me a workout – it’s a work horse with tons of attachments, super sucking power, but weighed a LOT. The Panasonic was so light that I finished vacuuming a lot sooner than I thought. There is about a 10 lb difference between my Dyson and the Panasonic. Today’s Dysons are still about 4-5 lbs heavier. I would go with Panasonic if you don’t like to struggle with heavier vacuums – those 5 lbs really make a difference if you have a lot to vacuum. Panasonic for the win!

    3. Cleaning: The Panasonic does pretty well in the cleaning power department, although I don’t think it sucks up as much as the Dyson. This is really debatable because the crap level in the carpets vary from day to day and room to room. Just from what I saw, it does suck up a lot of stuff though. Honestly, I wouldn’t be able to tell if my husband used the Panasonic or the Dyson on the carpet. Both do a really nice job of getting the carpets clean, and both are fairly quick about it. Both vacuums come with HEPA filters. Tie with Panasonic/Dyson.

    4. Attachments and Overall Design: The big difference between the Panasonic and Dyson comes in the form of the attachments and canister. The Dyson’s canister is almost twice the size of the Panasonic. While the Panasonic is light, it loses a lot when you have to empty the canister that often (see photos above). Also, the suction wand design is just begging for improvement. The wand plugs into the vacuum, and needs to be pulled out in order to use. This seems to fine now, but it may wear down and get loose over time. With the Dyson, you pull the wand out and up from the handle, so you can hold the handle to suck things up. You can also remove the wand from the Dyson entirely. Also, the wand on the Panasonic is very short. I hate having to bend over to vacuum those bigger chunks off the floor. The Telescope Reach wand on the Dyson rocks. I don’t use the attachments all too often, so both the Dyson and Panasonic seem fine.

The biggest issue with the cleaning is the actual dumping of the contents of the canister. With the Dyson, you push a button on the top of the canister and don’t even come close to touching any of the crap in the container. I’ve never gotten my hands sullied by dirt or dust. With the Panasonic, you need to pull the lid on the bottom of the canister off with your other hand to dump the contents. This is just asking for crap on your hands, crap on the floor if you don’t aim low enough into your garbage can, and just yuck! This is not a deal breaker on buying the Panasonic, but just keep in mind that it can be a mess if you empty the thing incorrectly. Dyson for the win on the overall design and bigger crap canister.

    5. Cord Length & Conveniences: This seems like a silly category, but my husband insisted. I use my vacuum a lot – so much, in fact, that I leave the thing in the kitchen most of the time with the cord just hanging around (we have 2 preschoolers…it gets crunchy around here a lot and I can’t handle it). He hates it because the cord on the Dyson is very VERY long – so long that I can plug it into one particular outlet in our kitchen/family room and reach every room in our house, including 4 bedrooms and living room. With a cord this long, it took a while to ravel up and put away. The Panasonic’s cord is much shorter. I have to go from room to room unplugging the unit to vacuum each room. This bugs me because I have to stop, unplug, then replug into another room to vacuum. The saving grace is that the vacuum cord on the Panasonic can be put away by just a push of a button…the cord will retract itself. How long this will last, I don’t know – hopefully it’s pretty durable. I personally like the Dyson because I can vacuum the whole house even if I…

I let someone borrow this vacuum to impress on them the new and improved design of vacuum cleaners these days. She had, as I did, a big upright Hoover, a great design in its day. She gave the Panasonic back to me saying, “I thought I had a good vacuum. But THIS is a good vacuum.”

That’s how I think of this Panasonic bagless. The words Jet Force in the title are pretty accurate, as it really sucks the debris off the floor and out of the rugs with a lot of power behind it. It has a setting for carpet and also a latch you press with your foot to lower the “nose” to hard floor level. To raise it again you have to use your hand, which is a minor point and may be because there is something amiss with my vacuum, but I thought I’d mention it.

As with most of the new bagless vacuums, the canister comes off and you simply release a latch to let the debris drop into the trash. Easy and hands free as it gets. It retains it’s suction even when the canister is pretty full because the path for the debris is so obstruction-free, unlike the older designs in vacuums. And it does fill up quickly. I thought the carpet was clean, even though I hadn’t vacuumed in a week or so. But when I saw what pulled into the Panasonic I was amazed.

The design of the onboard accessory holder is superior to another bagless I have, where the parts are too easy to knock off. Seems I spend too much time bending over and picking them back up – not so with the Panasonic. One thing I would really change is the cord retraction. I’ll be going along at a good clip when all of a sudden the vacuum shuts off. It turns out that the cord is retracting on every backward sweep of the vacuum and getting shorter and shorter until it pulls out of the wall. I fixed that by tying a single loose knot at the vacuum end of the cord so it can’t go back in until I’m ready for it to. Really annoying, but I get around it.

Love the vacuum, love the suction, love the ease of cleaning it out, love the color!
