The Bissell Total Floors Complete vacuum exceeded my expectations! The vacuum is powerful and did a fantastic job on every task I’ve tried so far. This model comes with added features that I’ve not had in other vacuums I’ve owned, and they really made a difference in how clean my house was after using it.

First of all, the vacuum has plenty of suction and did a great job on my floors. I have a mix of carpet, rugs, and hardwood in my home. The vac did a great job all around. Even my dark rugs looked much better. The on and off switch for the brush was very handy when vacuuming hard floors. I was able to easily turn off the brush so it didn’t just knock the dirt around when I cleaned the hardwood floors. It was interesting to see how quickly the dirt accumulated in the clear dirt cup as I worked.

This vacuum offers deep suction from the edge of the vac, so it can clean up anything along the baseboard. I was a bit skeptical of this, but it really did a great job. It will let me get a deep cleaning every time I vacuum, without having to take the extra time to use a crevice tool. Normally that ends up pretty low on my list of priorities, now I won’t have to worry about it.

It comes with an amazing TurboBrush tool. Bissell offers a turbo brush designed for pet hair with some of their models. However, I thought the regular turbo brush did an awesome job on pet hair! The dark red fabric on my couch is napped, so it attracts hair from my chihuahuas. They shed so much fur that I don’t understand why they aren’t bald. The turbo brush did a great job in removing it from the couch, even along the curves. My dogs have short hair, so you might not have the same results if you have a long hair pet. Bissell sells attachments designed for pet hair so you can upgrade if you need to. The turbo brush also did an amazing job under the couch cushions and other awkward places that need a brush but would be hard to use the whole vac on.

The TurboBrush attaches to the hose so you can use it to clean stairs easily and safely without having to maneuver the vac on the steps. The hose is very flexible and is long enough to do a good job on the steps. It just occurred to me that I can take it out to the garage and use the TurboBrush in the car!

The 40 foot cord is one of my favorite features of this vacuum. I can plug it in the most centrally located outlet in the house and can vacuum everywhere without having to change the plug! That might not seem like much to a lot of people, but it’s wonderful for me because one of my rooms contains outlets behind heavy furniture. Vacuuming the far corners has been tricky at times.

The handle is more ergonomic than on other models, so it’s easier to handle. This is particularly helpful during longer cleaning jobs, or anyone with wrist problems. This isn’t the lightest weight vac I’ve used, but it is lighter than most others I’ve tried and it’s easy to carry up the stairs.

I’d like to note that the resolution on the installation instruction pictures is very poor, causing a little assembly confusion. I also wish there was more than one hose extension tube, which would probably take cleaning to another level.

I never really thought that a vacuum could offer additional features that would really make me feel like my house was cleaner than using a regular vac. The Bissell Total Floors Complete lived up to it’s claims in my house.

Comparison to Panasonics of multiple Styles, November 28, 2012

I was able to give this a thorough workout during a pre-winter cleaning after getting fake Christmas tree needles everywhere. I am most familiar with my very old hand-me-down Panasonic upright and the newer Panasonic canister vacuums, which set my comparison points. Here are my findings:

    1) I quickly noticed that the Bissell Total Floors Complete sported some features I thought were ONLY available in canister style vacuums, specifically the fact that you can turn off the spin-brush to make it safe on wood floors and that it had the turbo-brush attachment. This made me realize why uprights are still in the game: combine all the attachment features (and the edge-cleaner that I never saw before) with the simplicity of the upright, and you have a real contender.

The other attachments work well, specifically the upholstery cleaner for my couch, and the other brush on the baseboards. The duster is a good idea as well, although in most cases I’m not sure it’s easier than a standard duster, since you have to drag the machine with you.

    2) Mobility. The two properly-placed handles on the Bissell make it easy to move around, but it is fairly heavy and bulky (will not get as far under furniture as the others I’m comparing to). The see-through stretch hose is awesome, but it sort of pulls the vacuum around (reminds me of my Rigid shop vac), which is a little unsettling, but I think it would be a rare situation that it actually pulls the vacuum over. The canister vacs are less bulky, but you have to deal with two pieces and you suffer the possibility of them falling over whenever the two pieces are connected and standing still. The Bissell can’t help but look a little cluttered with all the attachments on the back, but they all fit on there pretty well, so the functionality of the design is good.

    3) Power. The Bissell is not lacking; in fact it’s startling. I filled the container on my first run over a (just ok quality non-antique) 8’x11′ rug that has been vacuumed within the last month. That thing sheds, but that was too much. I moved the height switch to high carpet for the next rug and it still sucked up more sheddings than expected. I think that with the extra weight (compared to the head portion of the canister vac) and similar if not more power, it just picked up more that was missed over the last few cleanings.

That said, on wood floors, it did miss the very very fine dust that those carpets leave behind. My wood floors are old and not recently sealed, so it was a tough test for the Bissell, but it did need a once-over with the swiffer afterward.

    4) Filters. Included foam filters are washable, so there should be no recurring costs with this device. One disposable, optional Febreez filter is included which I did not try because I don’t like any sort of artificial smell when unnecessary. The suction power indicator is simple, but a nice touch, something I could use on my shop vac.

    5) Standard wrap cord improves over the old upright because it has the “quick release lever”, but it does not have the excellent self-spooling feature of the canister vacs.

    6) There is a pets version of the Bissell that I believe is the same thing, but with slightly modified dusting handle and turbo brush.

    7) Easy to use and simple to Empty. Vast improvement over old upright, and eliminates need for bags (which the canister vacs also still use).

The upright vs. canister issue is a tough one by itself. I tend to go for the upright when I just want to do the carpets quickly, but I find the canister style more convenient when you want to do a thorough cleaning of blinds, baseboards, couches, etc. because you can carry around just the small part. However, this upright has enough features that make it an even tougher call.

This seems to be an excellent vacuum for the price point. In the upright arena, I think you could pay twice as much, but only get something lighter that turns more easily. Definitely a quality purchase.
