Works well, but a bit pricey, October 15, 2010

I discovered the hard way that I needed to clean the carpet fibers out of my Hoover Steam Cleaner brush block. (After using my steam cleaner a few times, carpet fibers from my rug built up around the brushes, jammed them, and led to the plastic drive shaft on this brush block to break off. If you’re looking at the picture of the product, that’s the little green “finger” sticking up in on the lower portion of the picture.) The entire part is made of plastic, and while it feels a little flimsy, I don’t think it would have broken if I had properly cleaned the brushes after each use.

After researching the part, I bought a replacement brush block on Amazon. Be sure to check on the Hoover web site to make sure you’re ordering the right brush block for your steam cleaner … there are at least two different blocks, and they aren’t compatible. But once I received my replacement, it installed easily and works fine.

My only nit is that this simple brush block costs about ten percent of what it would cost to buy a new steam cleaner, which seems a bit pricey.

Bottom line … keep your brush block clean. But if you’re reading this review, I assume you’ve already learned that lesson the same way I did!

Works Great – smart design to prevent destroying drive gears, December 25, 2010

We purchased this as a replacement part. It works great. I have read some reviews who question why the little drive post is made as weak as it is and thus fails. It is to protect the drive line of the cleaner. This post acts as a fuse, and when the gears or cleaning heads get jammed with debris, the little post fails rather than binding the drive line of the steam cleaner and destroying it. Its a smart design. I’d rather place the cleaning head than the expensive motor parts.
