New technology in an older design make for a perfect entry level Roomba., June 13, 2016

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)
This is my third Roomba. The first one I purchased many years ago and it was great. I started it when I left for the day and it vacuumed when I was gone at work and when I got home I would come home and put it back on its dock. The battery died after 2 years and I replaced it and it was fine until I got a newer version a couple years later.

The second Roomba i purchased had new styling, very similar to the new 614 model. It was smarter and would return to its dock most of the time when it was finished cleaning. It did seem to get stuck under the same pieces of furniture once in a while which was annoying but overall I was very happy with that unit and it still works today after 3 years or so.

This Roomba 614 is the brand new 2016 model entry level vacuuming robot that looks almost identical to the older model, but it is more intelligent. It doesn’t get stuck under my furniture anymore. It seems to be smarter where it goes, and it always is able to return to its dock. I am not sure what they did, but it’s somehow smarter and it’s noticeable. The filter and dust collection bin has also been redesigned and it works great, although I didn’t have a problem with the older one either. One other improvement I’ve noticed is the smooth transition from wood floors to carpet or rugs. It seems to have less of a problem going over my rugs, when sometimes the older model would treat thicker rugs like a wall and go around them. I’m sure the sensors combined with newer software just makes it seem “smarter”, even on this entry level model which is great.

I don’t use the Roomba exclusively in my house, but I do use it almost daily on my hardwood floors and rugs. It makes regular vacuuming much faster and easier, and I only use my big vacuum about once a month now. You can probably get away with never using another vacuum, but I am picky about how clean my house is. I’ve always been impressed with these little vacuum robots. This newest version is the best one I’ve ever used, and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t like to vacuum. As long as you have a hard or carpet floor without a lot of junk on it, the Roomba can do its job and you will always come home to a vacuumed house. If you have pets that shed a lot, you may want to consider a higher model to really get all the hair, and so the dust bin doesn’t fill up too fast. One last note: my cat is scared of all Roombas, and runs away from it. I have tried for years to get her to ride around on it but it’s not going to happen. Your results may vary.

Cleaned like a dream, but a very basic model., July 14, 2016

    Power shopper!

My Roomba gave birth to a ferret!

I have been debating on getting a Roomba mostly to maintain the amazing work our cleaning lady does in between cleanings, which is every 2 weeks. We have a short haired dog who shreds quite a bit and a 1 year old who is all over, so we definitely were enticed by something that would help us keep the floors clean. We jumped on it when it was on sale for Prime Day.

Let me first say that this is our first and only Roomba and we haven’t tried any competitive products yet. It was just delivered today and we couldn’t wait to give it a whirl. We charged it as directed and let it go to work.

At first, the Roomba seemed to take a very haphazard approach, leaving areas completely untouched. Over time, it seemed to cover almost everything, and we were pleasantly surprised. It did seem like it slightly favored low pile area rugs over hard wood and laminate because it kept going over our rugs multiple times. We noticed that it was in one room for what seemed like forever, left and then came back to that same room even though it seemed clean already. Also, it moved some of our dining room chairs, which are pretty heavy. It also closed our bedroom door by itself which caused it to lock itself inside. I can see this being pretty annoying if we set it to clean while we’re at work and it locks itself in one room instead of cleaning the whole house.

I would say the unit of fairly noisy. Not as noisy as a traditional vacuum, but more so than central air conditioning noise. We eventually tuned it out over time, but our son and dog definitely seemed to continue to notice it. Which brings me to my next point, my dog was fine with the unit (didn’t try to attack it or anything), until it came very close to her. At that point, she ran away as quickly as she possibly could.

When we hit the dock button, we expected the unit to find its way back to the station within a minute or two, but it seemed to have gotten distracted along the way and spent another 30+ minutes before finally finding its way back to the dock. It makes me wonder if the Roomba’s batteries could die before it gets back to charge.

*****And so here comes the most AMAZING part: *****
We only ran the unit for about an hour and a half. We just had the cleaning lady come YESTERDAY and our house seemed pretty spotless. We were shocked at how much the unit picked up in such a short amount of time when our house appeared so clean. OUR ROOMBA GAVE BIRTH TO WHAT LOOKS LIKE A FERRET!

I do think the canister is rather small and I worry that it will be full before it has the opportunity to clean the whole house. We will have to see how this works out when we use it for longer periods of time.

Lastly, I was pretty annoyed that the manual that came with the unit specifically states that you can schedule cleanings, but our unit does NOT have this feature. This unit can only clean and dock, which didn’t seem abundantly clear when it was posted on Prime Day. Nevertheless, I think it did a great job cleaning and would recommend the product. I would mostly likely recommend an upgraded version instead of this one though.

    Too aggressive, April 26, 2017

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This thing is disturbingly aggressive. It does a good job with in-between cleaning, particularly cat litter and fur, on both hardwood and carpet which I love. However, it slams into furniture and moves my lighter-weight chairs, shelves, tables, etc. significantly. I actually had to buy “earthquake putty” to prevent heavy items from falling off of my shelves and damaging the hardwood floors. I also just realized it is damaging my white trim work that I recently repainted. Disappointed that a reputable company’s product performs like this.
