I know people swear by these, I was super excited to finally order. We have a 1 bd apt, approximately 800ish sq ft. Not huge, so I thought this would be perfect.

    It was the opposite.

Roomba couldn’t negotiate hardwood floors to carpeting. The device would get stuck when it hit an area rug. Think about that. It couldn’t get on top of an area rug!

Roomba would skip our entire living room, I had to pick it up and place it in that room if I wanted it clean.

Roomba couldn’t even find its home base…even though the device was right in front of it! I watched it try to figure out how to get “home” for five minutes with the base right there next to it.

Any cleaning job takes at least an hour plus, which means 1-2 filter empties. Think about that. Wanna run the machine while you’re out? Good luck. It will be full within 15 minutes or so.

Bottom line is you wind up spending *more* time babysitting your fancy new robot vacuum than if you just pulled out a regular one and did it yourself.

There is a learning curve, for both the roomba and the owner. My lower back issues are exacerbated by the motion of pushing a vacuum, and my sweet husband though willing, works long weeks and shouldn’t have to worry about keeping the floors tidy. The roomba has made a fantastic difference for us. I use it at least twice a week and it’s brought a certain peace to our household – pressure off of him, and I’m happy with a debris free floor. There are a couple of trouble spots which I try to maintain with the virtual boundaries (it came with one and I bought a second) but because there are areas of the house that require more frequent maintenance, I create barricades using broomsticks and rolled up blankets/chairs laying on their side to get a more specific job done. If I place roomba in certain rooms rather than allowing it to begin from it’s base, it isn’t able to find it’s way back to base, but if I let it run it’s course, it finds it’s way back to recharge and continue. This has been a game changer in our home…..though I wish I’d bought one long ago, they’ve advanced over the years, which I’m sure has brought them to the point where it’s a solid fit for our lifestyle. It works fine on my kilim, cowhide rug, persian carpet, around dining chairs, barstools, etc. The app is great – able to run it while I’m away as long as I make sure problem areas are blocked off, and that I’ve been diligent about emptying the bin.

No, it doesn’t “do” baseboards or reach into some weird spaces between walls and furniture – but neither did my husband!

I HIGHLY recommend a roomba, and most especially paying up for the 960 model with phone app.

At first we weren’t very impressed with this vacuum, as it didn’t cover the area very well and didn’t get close to the wall in most rooms. However it has gotten steadily better, so we are assuming it took awhile to get an accurate map of our house before its efficiency came up to par. Now it does very well and we are happy with its abilities. One shortcoming we think we have identified is its propensity to not cross a black line. The last two cleanings we could not figure why it was not going down this one small area by our front door. Since then we realized there is a small area rug in the hall that has a black border around it. It just doesn’t want to cross that line, believing there is a drop off located there. Next time we will take up the rug and see if it continues to that portion of the house.
