My floor has never been so clean before!, May 17, 2012

Just received my Scooba a few days ago. It was very easy to set up. The manual recommends that the first time charging should be “overnight charging”. It was a really long wait! After charging it for almost 24 hours, I poured in one of the packets of solution (came with 4 packets), and filled the tank up. Pressed the power button and the start button, and there it goes! It was a bit loud and it moved much slower than my Roomba. But I can instantly feel that the floor behind it became much cleaner than before! This amazing little thing followed the wall quite well, with about 1cm gap or so. It ran for about 55 minutes for my first tank, and only 40 minutes for the second tank before the battery went flat. My floor felt really clean after that… it has never felt this clean before! The dirty water that I poured out from the tank looked really black for the first run. On the second run, I used only plain water to run one more time on the same area. This time the water looks less dirty but it still contains dirt. So I guess it should be fine even if you were to use just plain water.

My only complaint is that it seems to drip drops of water from the left hand side under the base, every two feet or so. Not sure why this is happening. Other than that, everything was great.

    Really loves it!

Is it perfect? no. Is it useful? yes.

I have got this one for a while now. I hold on for a while before putting my review in. Before I write review for the Scooba, I would like to write a little about my two other robots.

I have two other robots, Roomba 550 and Neato XV11 from Neato Robotic. I use Roomba to maintain my first floor and Neato to maintain my second floor. They both have strength and work very well for their intended purpose. My first floor is all hardwood and ceramic floor, and the second floor is all carpet. Since there is a dog also living in the first floor, the Roomba works very well for floor with pet hair. Since Neato is very powerful robotic vacuum, it works extreme well for my carpet. I scheduled the Roomba to run the entire floor 4 days a week so the first floor usually clean without much hairs and debris left and I know that the main function of the Scooba is not to clean the debris and dog hair and I don’t want to burden it for.

I have around 1400 square foot first floor. I use the Scooba to clean my entire floor but I clean it one section at a time. I only use white vinegar or just pure water for now. They are both natural and sufficient.

    Floor Wash:
It clean pretty well in normal condition. I don’t have very dirty kitchen like some families with very young toddlers, my son is 7 years old, often wearing shoes walking inside the house. For the spot with tough food stains, it won’t clean. However, I don’t expect I can rub the stain away with touch mop anyway. I still need to bend and scrub the tough dry food stains myself. After washing, the floor wetness is like mopping the floor by yourself. It does have stain detection system built in so it will keep scrubbing the same area once it detect stains.

    Noisy:
The machine operates very noisy so don’t expect watch TV in a house with open floor plan. However, there is no problem if you stay in different floor like basement or second floor the the machine is running. I typically start it before I leave home for shopping or other activity or watching TV in the basement.

    Maintenance and usage:
Cleaning this Scooba is incredible easy and quick. It is very well designed for both operation and cleaning. I am very happy on this.
I wash the floor every one or two weeks. I need to fill up water twice to clean the entire floor and I have to divide the first floor in four/five sections.

    Summary:

It cleans better than mopping and fully automated. Combine with Roomba, you are free from routine cleaning, If you don’t have Roomba, and have a hairy floor then I would recommend sweeping the floor first before using it.
It is not for deep cleaning. However, I don’t feel deep cleaning is necessary if you keep washing the floor every week or two and wiping out the touch stains every time you accidentally drop large piece of food. it does better job than mopping myself.

it is very noisy so operate it in a floor when you are not staying in.
Very well designed and easy to maintain and operate.
Battery life is sufficient enough that I don’t feel battery is an issue at all.
Depend on how to value your time and money, I feel I would rather spend time with my son than taking more than 30 minutes mopping the floor every week or two.

I give four stars mainly due to its loudness.
