Years ago I tried one of the first Roomba models, and I immediately returned it. I viewed a video review of the Roborock S551, and decided to purchase this over the higher priced current top-of-the-line Roomba, and I’ve not been disappointed. The space being cleaned is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with kitchen and living room. The machine says the space it is cleaning is 85 square meters or about 915 square feet. It takes 94 minutes to clean with about 57% of the battery remaining when it’s finished. I use it about every 5 days, and the bin that hold the dirt usually is 90% full after it finishes. It goes under all kinds of furniture, also beds, and even over wires without getting tangled up. It got stuck one evening under a bed after it hung up in some underwear, but I just cleared it and started it off again. The battery didn’t have enough left to finish the job, and at 20% charge returned itself to the charging station for a full charge, and resumed itself on its own. The house is much cleaner than it ever was before, and it’s super nice to not tie up my time and energy keeping it that way. I have wood floors, area rugs, thick shag areas in front of the outside doors, and it manages to clean it all well without getting stuck. The app will show you where it’s been, and it truly doesn’t leave anything behind–even dead ficus leaves. I wish it had a larger dirt bin, but it is very quick and easy to empty. It isn’t just a gadget–it actually is keeping everything much cleaner. The Roborock actually shows a floor plan of my house as it sees it and shows with lines every single pass it has made over the entire cleaning area. It knows it’s already gone around the edge of a room, and then doesn’t go all the way to the wall again when it’s cleaning the space in between where it has already been before. My housekeeper comes once every 4 weeks, is here for 9 hours that costs me $200. So, the 94 minute cleaning is saving me about $30 if she came here to do it herself. So, I consider that it’s paying for itself in the long run. I highly recommend this Roborock S551 Xiaomi Vacuum and consider it to be very well made and designed. In fact, I will be keeping my eye out for other Xiaomi designed products because this one is so well made.

After a month of ownership I feel confident in reviewing.

Like many others on here I went through the process of researching on which robotic vacuum to buy. After reading so many glowing reviews of the Xiaomi, I figured it was worth a shot.

Let me tell you, I have not been disappointed. I considered the Neato D7 and the top end Roomba models before landing on this Xiamo – which is the second generation one.

The good: this thing cleans great. The vacuum is plenty powerful enough to clean almost as good as a stand up vacuum that we have. The Hoover is now sitting in the garage where it’s been for a month. It also has a mopping feature – which is a big bonus over the others. The way the dust bin comes out is smart, as is the way the water bin and mop head slide out for cleaning. There’s been some thought into it and it’s user friendly.

The app is smart and it maps your house like a blueprint – it’s incredibly accurate too. You can do spot cleaning, where you can basically draw an area on your house map to clean it up to three times. You can create multiple zones – great for high traffic zones. The application will keep track of how many hours the vac has and will recommend scheduled cleansing or replacement of parts. Even the filter pops out for cleaning and all the parts are cheap from Amazon and easy to replace.

It won’t save the map, it’ll remap each time – which is good because each time it’ll map accurately based on what’s there when you clean, not what was there a week ago. If you’re considering the other vacs for the multifloor ability, as I was, don’t waste your money. Since it maps each time, you just carry it to a floor, start it up, and when it’s done it’ll go back to where you started it. The laser mapping is incredibly accurate and much better than randomly bumping around the place hoping it gets clean. Seeing the lines of freshly cleaned carpet, looking like a cleanly cut baseball field, is super satisfying.

The mopping is good. It’s not going to be as good as doing it the old fashion way, but it’s excellent to use in between actual mopping. Plus, none of the other vacs have it so it’s a bonus. Pro-tip: buy Bona floor solution to throw in there and it’s better than water.

The Cons: the mopping is decent, but not brilliant. But since it’s essentially a bonus feature, it’s well worth it and it does a good job. The dust bin is smaller than other big names and there’s no notification if it’s full. If it’s been a while I just pause cleaning and and empty it. Overall nothing has stood out as being majorly frustrating, I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

I was really close to buying the pricier, well-known brands because I was worried if this “Chinese brand” would be cheap or less effective. I can tell you it’s not – it’s literally $200 to $300 cheaper for a vacuum of equal, if not better, capability and quality.

Do yourself a favor and just get this smart vacuum.
